The European Union approves the first law to regulate Artificial Intelligence in the world

  • Council and Parliament strike a deal on comprehensive rules for trustworthy AI, which aligns with the ethical approach to AI that the LivAI project advocates for
  • Europe becomes a pioneer in AI regulation

December 13th, 2023, Brussels. On Friday 8 December, the Council Presidency and European Parliament negotiators reached a provisional agreement on the proposal to establish rules on artificial intelligence (AI), the so-called artificial intelligence act, which aligns with the ethical approach to AI and data promoted by the LivAI project in the field of adult education.

With the adoption of this deal, the EU has become the first in the world to set in place robust regulation on AI, guiding its development and evolution in a human-centric direction.

Artificial intelligence act

The AI act is a pioneering legislative initiative in the world with the potential to foster the development and uptake of safe and trustworthy AI across the EU’s single market. As Carme Artigas, Spanish secretary of state for digitalisation and artificial intelligence, stated, “This is a historical achievement, and a huge milestone towards the future! Today’s agreement effectively addresses a global challenge in a fast-evolving technological environment on a key area for the future of our societies and economies”.

The main idea is to regulate AI based on the latter’s capacity to cause harm to society following a ‘risk-based’ approach: the higher the risk, the stricter the rules. As the first legislative proposal of its kind in the world, it can set a global standard for AI regulation in other jurisdictions, just as the GDPR has done, thus promoting the European approach to tech regulation in the world stage.

The LivAI project, aligned with the European regulation of AI.

LivAI, as a project focused on the ethical approach to AI and data in the field of adult education, welcomes the Artificial Intelligence Act to ensure that AI systems are safe and respect fundamental rights and EU values.
