- The LivAI project lines up with some of the issues discussed at the European Business Summit 2023
- The summit aims at presenting a united response across all economic sectors, including AI
November 30th, 2023, Brussels. On 28th and 29th of November, the 2023 edition of the European Business Summit “The 2024-2029 EU Agenda: Strong Business for a Stronger Europe”, was held in Brussels with the aim of presenting a united response across all economic sectors. Experts and Members of the European Parliament discussed several issues related to the future of Europe. Topics such as innovation, sustainability, cybersecurity, economic resilience, digital skills, artificial intelligence and education were raised, the latter two being related to the objectives of the LivAI project, which focuses on the ethical approach to AI and data in the field of adult education.
The event comprised various panels, with particular emphasis placed on those addressing artificial intelligence (IA) and education, as they are directly related to the LivAI project:
Empowering Europe’s AI Future: Fostering Bold and Responsible Innovation
This panel explored the opportunities and challenges that AI presents for Europe, emphasising the need for bold and responsible innovation as a means of boosting EU competitiveness. Within this board, Kent Walker, President of Global Affairs in Google, highlighted the need of “preparing the workforce for an AI-driven job transition” in relation to the digital skills gap and the shortage of STEM talent, which are barriers to the digital transition. Also, to invest in alternative pathways for non-college graduates, such as certifications that prove their digital competences. In that sense, the LivAI project offers the necessary tools to prepare adults for the AI-driven job transformation and provides a certification that validates the skills acquired through an e-learning platform.
Unlocking the Potential of Artificial Intelligence: From Regulation to Innovation
The European Union stands at the forefront of shaping the future of AI, placing a strong emphasis on responsible development. The commitment to finding a balance between AI advancement and effective regulation is rooted in the vision of AI as a catalyst for economic growth and societal progress. The ongoing negotiations concerning the AI Act hold immense importance, as they will define the boundaries of AI, define the extent of regulation, and identify high-risk areas. “We are negotiating an AI Act on the basis of what the commission proposed in 2020, and we can see how fast AI evolved in just 4 years” stated Vera Jourová, Vice President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency.
Digital Skills & Education: Enhancing Digital Literacy to Empower Young People
The panel discussion, within the initiative of Our Feed Our Future, brought together policymakers, academics, and young activists who are using their presence online to advocate for change, build their own platform and to take ownership of the online world. The discussion focused on how the right skills and competencies can be ensured so youth can make the most of the online world, and how Europe can foster its digital future. It was also raised the role of non-formal education programmes, such as what offers the LivAI project for adults.
A New Educational Approach to STEM Jobs
This roundtable aimed at disseminating and exploiting the Shoes Your Life results, improving understanding of their use and integration into the European Education System as well as presenting all the potentialities of digitalisation in the classroom. This roundtable brought together educators, industry professionals, and students to explore how digitalisation can be used to improve educational opportunities in STEAM careers.
