The Finnova Foundation successfully held the “Future Skills Forum: Challenges and Opportunities in the Digital Age” on October 17 at the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). This event brought together experts and decision-makers to explore the growing importance of digital skills and the ethical use of new technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI).

In the first session, focused on the ethical implications of artificial intelligence, Sonia Pérez Romero from the European Data Protection Supervisor stressed the importance of the AI Act, which will come into force in 2024 and aims to balance innovation with the protection of fundamental rights. In addition to Pérez Romero, participants included Lorena Jaume Palasí, founder of the Ethical Tech Society, who emphasized the crucial role of national authorities in implementing the AI Act, and Karine Caunes, director of CAIDP Europe, who addressed the possible implications of AI in citizens’ daily lives.

Joanna Sliwa, Senior Scientist at NATO, shared her perspective on how emerging technologies can impact security, while Rubén Araque Rodilla, City Councilor for Security of the Benaguasil City Council, raised concerns about AI in local and public safety contexts.

In the second session, dedicated to the personalization of learning through artificial intelligence, Tatjana Babrauskienė, EESC representative, pointed out the challenges the education system faces in integrating digital technologies, primarily due to a lack of technological knowledge among teaching staff.

Óscar Belmonte, professor at Universitat Jaume I, and Georgi Dimitrov, Head of the Digital Education Unit at the European Commission, added to the discussion by explaining how AI can personalize teaching methods and improve educational outcomes by adapting to the specific needs of each student.

This event was part of the Erasmus+ LivAI project, which aims to create educational resources on AI ethics and develop an e-learning platform for digital skills certification. The Finnova Foundation remains committed to promoting digital transformation and acquiring new technological competencies.
